In A shocking turn of events, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), resigned amidst a maelstrom of controversy and allegations of gross incompetence.

The embattled chairman’s exit comes after a damning petition by his own board members, citing his “dictatorial tendencies, highhandedness, and blatant disregard for due process”.

Usman’s tenure was marked by a series of egregious errors, including the mishandling of a visit by the Saudi Arabia Minister of Hajj, which was meant to strengthen bilateral relations and secure more hajj slots for Nigerian pilgrims. Instead, Usman’s alleged breach of protocols and lack of diplomacy led to a diplomatic embarrassment, which helped the board members’ earlier petition to the Presidency, calling for his removal to fly.

The petition, which was forwarded to the Presidency, cited numerous instances of Usman’s “incompetence, arrogance, and disregard for due process”. The breach of protocols during the Saudi Minister’s visit was seen as the final straw, and it became clear that Usman’s position was untenable.

According to sources, the Presidency had been reviewing the petition and was poised to take decisive action, including the possibility of firing Usman. However, in a move seen as a face-saving measure, Usman opted to resign instead.

“Resignation was the best option for him, given the circumstances,” said a senior government official. “He would have been shown the door if he hadn’t resigned. This way, he exits with some dignity intact.”

The resignation has paved the way for the government to consider a replacement, and stakeholders are hopeful that the new leadership will bring much-needed reforms and a fresh approach to managing Nigeria’s hajj operations.

As the nation waits for a new chairman to be appointed, many are hoping for a new era of transparency, accountability, and professionalism at NAHCON. The road ahead will be tough, but with Usman’s departure, there is hope for a brighter future for Nigeria’s hajj administration.
