The Muslim Association of Nigeria, (MAN) has commended the Federal Government for its decision to rename the Nigeria Prison Service as Nigeria Correctional Service.
In a statement jointly signed by Alhaji T. O. Ojikutu and Alhaja N. Adebayo, President and National Public Relations Officer respectively, after the association’s National Executive Council meeting held recently, MAN commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Correctional Service Act into law.
The association opined that the law would come with lots of innovative provisions including the introduction of non-custodial section capable of facilitating effective management of the Administration of Criminal Justice system in the country.
MAN said that steps being proposed with the new law are capable of addressing the perennial problems of prison overcrowding and the attendant issues of releasing inmates who are more depraved than they went into the prison.
“As the new names implies, the service is to ensure true correction of inmates before their release into the community as a way of reducing crime rates in the society and ensuring public safety.”
The association implored the Federal government to ensure effective implementation of the law in the interest of the general public.
