The Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN) on Monday called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to restore peace in the country.

The appeal is contained in a statement jointly signed by Hajia Halimah Jubril, National President of FOMWAN, and Hajia Biliqees Oladimeji, Chairperson Publications, on the occasion of the Islamic New Year.

Muharram 1 (Aug. 10, 2021) is marked as the New Islamic Calendar of Hijrah 1443AH.

“FOMWAN is concerned by the high level of insecurity in the country that has continued to threaten the peace of this country, Nigeria.

“In particular, we are concerned by the day-by-day reports of kidnappings of our children, parents, teachers and even our military and paramilitary personnel.

“We are equally concerned that in spite of efforts of government and the military to curb the menace, we cannot sleep with our two eyes closed as a nation.

“The rate of armed banditry and insurgency keep on rising by the day and government seems overwhelmed,” the statement read in part.

FOMWAN declared that it was unhappy at the high rate of women trafficking, child abuse, drug abuse and violence against women in Nigeria.

“We urge all and sundry to assist our security agents by providing useful information that could lead to the nipping in the bud all criminal activities.

“We also urge our governments to provide employment opportunities to our teeming youth to stem the tide of youth restfulness in Nigeria,” it said.

It however commended the efforts of government agencies, such as the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).

The association extended hearty greetings and congratulations to all Muslims, especially Muslim women nationwide on the occasion of the new Islamic year.

“FOMWAN gives praises, adorations and appreciations to Allah for sparing lives of Muslims especially our mothers through the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic that shook the whole world in 2020,” it stated.
