The lingering crisis over the increase in school fees at Abesan Muslim Community, MUSCOM, has been resolved, bringing relief to parents and students.
The school, which comprises both primary and secondary schools, will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, after being closed for several days due to protests by parents over the 80% hike in school fees.
The protests were sparked by the school management’s decision to unilaterally increase the school fees without consulting or getting approval from stakeholders. The Parents Teachers Association (PTA) argued that the increase was not justifiable.
Prof. Ishaq Lakin Akintola, Director of Muslim Rights Concerns, MURIC, mediated in the crisis, appealing to both parties to give peace a chance for the sake of the children.
The peace meeting was held at the Abesan Central Mosque, which resulted in the suspension of the fee increase. A committee will be set up to investigate the issue and provide recommendations.
According to Mr. Taofeek Adeosun, President of MUSCOM, the school management shut down the school to prevent a breakdown of law and order and to ensure the safety of the students. “We took the decision to close the school temporarily to avoid any potential chaos and to protect our students,” he explained.
Abesan Muslim Community is the only Muslim school in the area, making it a vital institution for the local community. The school has a reputation for providing quality education and has been a beacon of hope for many families.
The resolution of the crisis has been welcomed by parents and students, who are eager to return to their normal routine. “We are relieved that the issue has been resolved and our children can return to school,” said a parent, who wished to remain anonymous.
The 7-man committee set up to investigate the issue is expected to provide recommendations on the school fees and other related matters. The composition of the committee will include three persons from the school management, three from the PTA and one person, non-resident, preferably a lawyer who will serve as the chairman.
The school management has promised to implement the recommendations and work towards finding a lasting solution to the crisis just as the school reopens Wednesday for academic activities.
