The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) in Lagos State has expressed deep condolences over the death of a firebrand journalist and Editor, Mr. Waheed Bakare.

Until his death, Bakare was the Saturday Editor of the New Telegraph.

Bakare, who died after a brief illness on Sunday, was buried at his residence on Monday according to Islamic rites.
Amir of MSSNLagos, Saheed Ashafa (PhD), described the death of Bakare as monumental loss for the Nigerian Muslim community, media industry, and young media professionals.

He said the deceased played a potent role in mentorship, sponsorship, and training of young Muslim and aspiring media professionals, some of whom have become “giants” in the media industry.

“MSSN Lagos and a lot of young media professionals just cannot forget Mr. Waheed Bakare in a hurry. We are all beneficiaries of his vast and profound knowledge and professional media expertise.

“He trained our members on several occasions. He mentored and sponsored a number of our members for media programmes. He was indeed a great achiever,” he said.

He recalled that Bakare was one of the beneficiaries of the MSSNLagos Media Merit Award.

Describing him as thoroughbred Muslim editor worthy of emulation by other Muslim media experts, Ashafa said “his position benefited Islam and Muslim organisations in no small measure”.

He prayed that Allah accept him as a righteous servant and forgive all his shortcomings and give the bereaved family the enabling fortitude to bear the loss.
