THE Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has urged the federal and state governments, National Assembly and political class to engage in trust-building dialogue on tax reform bills, rather than perpetuating unnecessary tension and polarization.
At its 10th Expanded General Purpose Committee meeting held on December 1, 2024, at the National Mosque Auditorium in Abuja, the Council commended the Federal Government, traditional and religious leaders for reducing communal clashes nationwide.
“We commend the efforts of the Federal Government, traditional and religious leaders in reducing communal clashes across the country,” said Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, NSCIA President-General and Sultan of Sokoto.
The meeting, presided over by Abubakar, brought together prominent Muslim leaders, government officials and stakeholders to discuss critical national issues.
“The current economic climate is harsh, and we advise governments to create a more business-friendly environment,” Abubakar emphasized. “We encourage Muslims to harness economic opportunities and explore innovative ways to empower our youth.”
The Council also stressed the importance of prioritizing food security and education for citizens’ well-being. “Food security and education are pivotal to the welfare of our citizens, and we urge governments to prioritize these areas,” said Prof. Salisu Shehu, Deputy Secretary-General of NSCIA.
Regarding the non-recognition of Muslim marriage certificates, Abubakar stated, “We decry this discrimination and vow to address it. Muslim marriage certificates should be recognized and respected.”

The Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Sokoto, was reaffirmed as the sole accredited agency for organizing national Qur’anic recitation competitions. The Council also proposed five additional resident and visiting Imams for the National Mosque.
In attendance were Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Prince Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Regional Planning Mallam Uba Maigari Ahmadu and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The meeting concluded with a call for Nigerians to remain optimistic about the country’s future. “We urge Nigerians to remain confident in a brighter future for our beloved country,” Abubakar said.
