Saudis mourn as Zamzam well Engineer dies at 80

Saudis on Tuesday were mourning the loss of Yahya Hamza Koshak following his death at the age of 80. An engineer by profession, he became famous for his services to the Zamzam well.

Koshak, also known as the “father of engineers,” was a former director general of the National Water Company and member of the Okaz Organization for Press and Publication.

He was born in Makkah, where his father, a merchant, worked during the Umrah season, serving as chairman of the Establishment of Motawifs of Pilgrims of Turkish Muslims of Europe America and Australia.

His mother was a close friend of the wife of the late King Faisal, Princess Effat, whom she met at the Makkah’s Grand Mosque.

Koshak studied in one of Taif city’s first schools after it was founded by King Faisal and Princess Effat.

He studied engineering at Ain Shams University in Cairo, but completed his degree in Riyadh. He later continued his education in the US, where he obtained a Ph.D. in engineering sciences

Engineer Dr. Yahya Hamza Koshak, one of the first people to enter the well of Zam Zam on record and witness the source of the water in a major cleaning project during the era of King Khalid in 1979, passed away yesterday evening in Saudi Arabia.

In one of the largest cleaning operations in the history of the well, the engineer was responsible in leading a team to enter the well near to the Ka’bah.

The Doctor & the Engineer Yahya Hamza Koshak was born in 21st July, 1941 Makkah Al-Mukaramah City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He lived his childhood there and he got his Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools in Taif Alnamozajeyyah (Formal) Schools then he joined Ayen Shams University in Cairo then he Transferred To Riyadh and Obtained Bachelor Degree in Engineering from Al-Riyadh University in 1967 AD. He had assigned Civil Engineer in the Ministry of Interior for Municipal Affairs since date: 10/05/1967, Deputy Mayor of Makkah for Technical Purposes from date: 01/10/1967 till the date: 03/09/1968. After that he got his MS in (Civil & Environmental Engineering) from Washington University, U.S.A in 1970

He had assigned as a Partner of a British Consulting Firm “Watson Consulting Engineers” from 03/02/1971 to 27/03/1976, Director General of Water and Sewage Department Western Region with a decision from Ministries Councils date: 18/06/1977, according to his request he got early retirement in 05/04/1981, he had been the Deputy Board and Directors for OKAZ Publishing Association then board member for three years continuously from 19/041/1398 HD to 30/12/1402 HD. Then he got Doctorate Degree in Engineering Sciences from Washington University, U.S.A in 1988 and he got Doctorate Degree in Natural Treatment from Lengiston University, Honololo State, USA in 2003.

He had Honorable Doctorate Degree in Alternative Medicine from the International Open University in Colombo, Srilanka in Nov. 2004 Beside he had several courses in Alternative Treatment from USA, Germany & Spain.

He attended and open the conference of Construction Week Design & Build Awards 2011 coming up on December 6th, at InterContinental Hotel, Riyadh by a welcoming introduction.

Dr. Yahya Koshak Author of “Zamzam Book” which gives complete and comprehensive knowledge from religious and scientific Perspective of Zamzam Well. It is written in Arabic and English languages. Producer of a video Documentary Film on Zamzam Well in English, Arabic, French, Urdu and Indonesian languages.
